I’ve been a long time user of Password Safe but was frustrated that I didn’t always have the password database at my disposal–most of the time when switching between my home and work machines. There are USB thumb drive solutions, but I never seem to have the device handy, or didn’t want to leave it connected to my PC (it’s on my keychain).
A great solution is to hook up the Password Safe database with Microsoft Live Mesh. Live Mesh allows you to synchronize folders across machines. The folders are only accessible to authorized users and of course, the Password Safe database is fully encrypted.
That said, I installed Password safe on all my machines:
Then added the database’s directory to my Live Mesh synchronization list:
Now when I need to get a password (or add/update one), I just use Password Safe locally and Live Mesh takes care of synchronizing it to all of my machines.
This doesn’t solve the issue of not using my own machine; for that I recommend Yubikey.
Regardless of the password database application you use, I recommend checking out Live Mesh. It is a really great file synchronization utility (not to mention remote desktop access).
